Urgent:-Tibetans need earthquake relief

Urgent:-Tibetans need earthquake relief

Dear friends,
As you know, an earthquake measuring 6.9 on the Richter scale hit the Tibetan province of Kham Kyegudo (Yushu = Chinese) in the early morning of Wednesday, 14th April 2010.  According to sources from the affected area, the natural disaster has resulted in the deaths of over ten thousand people.  Many more are injured and countless others are trapped underneath the rubble of their collapsed homes.  Over 85% of the houses in Kyegudo have collapsed, partly due to poor construction.  At the moment, Tibetans in the affected area are facing severe problems, including a lack of basic needs such as clothing, food, medical supplies, shelter, etc.
Therefore, we would like to request that all the friends and supporters of Tibet donate to help the earthquake victims of the quake through the following websites:

Update on the Qinghai (Kyegudo) Earthquake

Update on the Qinghai (Kyegudo) Earthquake
The death toll of the earthquake which hit Qinghai - Kyegudo Province on Wednesday morning continues to rise. Three aftershocks hit the same area last night, which resulted in the collapse of more buildings but not in any casualties. Unfortunately, another aftershock hit the area this morning, after which another 20 dead bodies were recovered near the Dichue River.
The latest information from Tibet is that there are over 10,000 (ten thousand) dead as a result of the quake, including 1,000 bodies piled up in Kyegudo Monastery. More corpses are accumulating in other monasteries, as well as in cemeteries and hospitals. Many people are still buried under the rubble of collapsed houses and other buildings. This area of Tibet already has a low percentage of Tibetans, and the earthquake has decimated the population.
Rescue efforts continue, led by the efforts of monks from nearby monasteries. Seven hundred monks from Kyegu Monastery, another seven hundred from Serjhu Monastery and five hundred from Sethar Monastery, as well as monks from other places, have joined in the cause to save victims from the rubble.
Chinese government television continues to state that the death toll remains around 600, but locals believe the number to be much higher. Teachers from schools in the earthquake affected area have appealed to the government to update the casualty list given the huge number of students who died as a result of collapsed schools. They charge that the government is attempting to hide the true extent of the earthquake's damage by spreading false news. Rescuers continue to be transported to the area, and injured people are being taken by plane to hospitals in Siling and Sichuan.
This earthquake is considered to be the worst natural disaster and among the many tragic events to afflict modern Tibetan society. Local Tibetans, reeling from the loss of family and friends, are denouncing the lack of help from the government. They note that Chinese Army efforts are concentrated on the residences of government officials as well as other government buildings, while lay people struggle to get help. Many people in the earthquake affected area still face a critical situation.

Letter to Hu and Wen from People of Kyi Gu DO

Greetings to President Hu and Premier Wen Jiabo,

Following this tragic natural disaster, we are grateful that the Chinese government could help us by sending rescue workers and the Army to the affected area. Their helping hands have saved a lot of lives. We are thankful for the help, and we will always remember the aid given to us.
Our society is a very religious one, and we have great faith in the teaching of Lord Buddha and His Holiness the Dalai Lama. We have had this faith since the time of our great-grand forefathers and foremothers of Tibet. The impact of this earthquake has created a great disturbance to both our bodies and minds. At this crucial moment, we appeal for you to consider permitting His Holiness to visit the earthquake affected area in order to conduct prayer chants for the victims who lost their lives, as well as to console and encourage survivors. We the people from the affect area ask the great leaders,President Hu Jintao and Premier Wen Jiabo, to take pity on us and allow His Holiness the Dalai Lama to visit.
Hundreds of thousands of people in the disaster area are hopeful that the Chinese government and His Holiness the Dalai Lama can overcome their differences in order for this visit to occur. The only reason for this appeal is for the Dalai Lama to visit solely for religious purposes. There is no hidden agenda--we merely wish for the Dalai Lama to lead us in prayer after this tragic disaster. A visit by His Holiness the Dalai Lama is the only way for us to overcome our terrible grief.
