Saturday, 15 May 2010

Dharamshala: National Democratic Party of Tibet (NDPT) held a press conference this afternoon to formally announce its 2011 Prime Minister and Parliamentary candidates. The conference was chaired by NDPT President Chime Youngdung.

NDPT President and chairperson of the conference Chime Youngdung formally endorsed two candidates, Dr. Lobsang Sangay and former Tibetan minister Tenzin N. Tethong, for the upcoming 2011 Tibetan Prime Ministerial election, and revealed a list of 21 candidates - 6 from Dhotoe, 5 from Dhomed, 10 from U-Tsang - that it will be backing for the concurring 2011 Parliamentary elections.

At the third General Body Meeting of NDPT held in Dharamsala in March, executive members and representatives of NDPT's regional chapters across India and Nepal passed a resolution to back three nominees for Prime Minister (Kalon Tripa), and 45 Members of Parliament (MPs) - fifteen from each of the three Tibetan provinces.

Due to other commitments of the proposed Parliamentary candidates, and the ill-health of the third Prime Ministerial candidate, Chime Yungdong today announced that only two candidates for Prime Minister and 21 Parliamentary candidates have accepted NDPT backing.

Chime Youngdung commented that after which focused on introducing potential candidates for the upcoming elections - NDPT will invite the official candidates to speak at length about their political stances and policies.

Chime Youngdung said that pamphlets introducing prospective MPs will also be circulated around Tibetan settlements in India.

Dr. Lobsang Sangay is the first Tibetan to have gained a doctorate from Harvard University. He is well known for his scholarly work on Tibetan issues and is noted for putting together groundbreaking conferences between Tibetan and Chinese scholars at the university. He has been a prominent member of the Tibetan Youth Congress, and became its youngest ever executive member.

Tenzin N. Tethong is a fellow of Stanford University and a former representative of His Holiness the Dalai Lama in New York and later in Washington. He has been involved in many initiatives aiding Tibetan issues such as The Tibet Fund and Potala Publications, and in 1980 was elected to the Tibetan Government in-Exile where he served in various capacities.

The First Stage of the NDPT's 2011 Kalon Tripa and Parliamentary Campaign in North India

The first stage of the NDPT's 2011 campaign for its Kalon Tripa and Parliamentary candidates began on March 3rd from the Tibetan settlement of Dekyi Ling.  Party President Mr. Chime Youngdung and Office Assistant Mr. Tenzin Younten kicked the campaign off.
The purpose of the campaign is to spread awareness and knowledge about the upcoming 2011 elections of the Tibetan government-in-exile.  These elections are very important for the future of Tibet and our party is doing its best to spread the message of these elections..
Mr. Youngdung and Mr.Younten left Dharamsala on the evening of 02/05/10 and reached Dekyi Ling at 7 in the morning.  After a two hour rest, their talk began at 9:00 a.m.  Regional NDPT members were there to organize the meeting.
These meetings are different in every Tibetan settlement we visit.  In Dekyi Ling, our regional members took all responsibility for organization and they even gave brief introductions of the NDPT and of President Youndung.  This made it much easier to begin our talk and get right into the issues.
Our experiences in other places like newly established Tibetan settlements are a bit different because there are no offices of Tibetan NGOs like the Tibetan Youth Congress or the Tibetan Women's Association, plus there are no NDPT members.  We start these meetings by introducing the NDPT, explaining why the party was established and explaining why we are visiting the settlement.  Lucky for us, even though we don't have regional members in places like this, we have been able to rely in regional members of the TYC and TWA to help us out.  They help by:
· Organizing the meeting
· Informing the Tibetan people about the meeting
· Providing food and refreshments
· & paying the charges for the community hall, as well as providing other help
For this first stage of the NDPT campaign in North India, we visited the following 7 settlements:
1.      Dekyi Ling Tibetan settlement
2.      Tsering Dhonden Ling (New Rajpur settlement)
3.      Rajpur Tibetan settlement
4.      Clementown settlement
5.      Lhakanwala settlement
6.      Ponta Sahib settlement
7.      Purwala settlement (Sakya Settlement)
We did not have the opportunity to visit every settlement in Dehardun due to a lack of time, the small number of residents in those settlements, and due to our already demanding schedule.  We did not neglect or ignore those settlements.
The meetings we held were very important and addressed the concerns of many Tibetans. In each of these meetings, NDPT President Chime Youngdung gave speeches that had the same content.  Without reproducing the speech in its entirety, I'll touch upon the main subjects.  Every one of the following points was discussed at length, and they are all important for a future Tibet:
1)      First and foremost, the purpose of our visit was to introduce our two prominent nominees for 2011 Kalon Tripa, Dr. Lobsang Sangay and Mr. Tenzin Namgyal Tethong.
2)      He also spoke about future Members of Parliament (Chithue), and how people should step up and take responsibility for their government.
3)      The NDPT gave two conditions to Chithue nominees before offering them our support in the campaign. These two conditions are;
(i)     If a candidate is elected, they must support any bill which strengthens democratic processes in Parliament.
(ii)   If a candidate is elected, she or he must attend official NDPT meeting when their time allows for it.
4)      Another main point Mr. Chime emphasized was the need for a bicameral legislation. Many democratic nations, such as India, the United Kingdom and the USA, have bicameral legislatures.
5)      He reminded the Tibetan people how critical the situation is in this present moment where HH the Dalai Lama is advancing in age.
6)      He also spoke about why Professor Samdong Rinpochen cannot be re-elected for third time.
7)      Finally, the differences between NGOs and political parties like the NDPT were discussed.
These were the topics of discussions and the main points President Youngdung spoke about.  He also answered every question the audiences had and responded positively to people who gave suggestions and feedback.
Overall, the first stage of the campaign concluded with success and to our satisfaction. This success was not only due to us, but also to the people who helped us.  We therefore would like to thank:
· All the regional members of NDPT Dekyi Ling
· Regional Tibetan Youth Congress of Ponta Sahib, Sakya settlement, Lhakanwala
· Regional Tibetan Women Association of Ponta Sahib, Lhakanwala, Clementown, Rajpur, Sakya settlement
· All the people who participated in the meetings
· Our driver Ugen who drove us all the way
· And most important our NDPT team in Dharamsala who have supported us

Fourth Day of 2011 Campaign

Today is the last day of our campaign here in Dehradun. Today we are visiting Tibetan settlement in Ponta and Purwala. We left early in the morning and we reached Ponta around 9:00 a.m. when we reach there some people were yet to come. We rested there for 15 minutes and by that time regional TYC and TWA called us. Meeting started by 9:15 a.m.
Mr. sherab gyamtso Regional tibetan youth congress president gave brief introduction about our party and why we came here today. He also introduces Mr. Chime to people and sat down.
Before Mr. Chime started the talk he requested the CTA official Mrs. Karma Dolma to leave since government officials are not allowed in such meeting. Later speech was given by our president Mr. Chime Youngdong lak. Where the talk was on same thing; to introduce the people our two nominees and how important it is to have bicameral legislation in parliament. Also he told people that differences between the NGO and political party like us in this community.
Later he further specified the importance of voting in our society and be very cautious. He emphasizes on the future chithue where the people usually talk about the need of new members in parliament but when the result comes, the elected people are same. So he told people to think by themselve and do little research before voting for anyone.
Rest of Mr. Chime speech was same and the question and answer were held but people gave their point of view and most them agree with us.
Later when the meeting was over by 10:30 a.m. we had lunch there which was prepared but regional youth congress. Right after we finished we headed towards (Purwala) Sakya settlement. We reached there around 1 p.m. and soon we started the meeting, which was organized by the regional TYC and TWA.
Meeting there went very smoothly and like other settlements it was very successful. The content of the meeting was very much same, so I don't think I need to mention all that.
We left from Sakya settlement by 2:30 p.m. the question answer session and everything went very nicely and we were satisfied.
When we reached there at Dekyi ling it was already by 4:30 p.m. we paid the rent for the car and we thanked the driver. Also we are very grateful to the Dekyi Ling regional NDPT member who were very supportive and helped us all the way.
We thank Mr. Tsering dorjee (regional president) mr. Chime lak (general secretary) every member of Dekyi Ling NDPT members.
We also like to thank the regional tibetan women association in every region and also tibetan youth congress in every settlements. We are thankful for your help and we always wish to have contact and help each other in every way.
We on behalf of all NDPT members would like to thank you all for support in both morally and practically.

The DAY 3 -----First round of Kalon Tripa and Members of Parliament campaign north India.

Day 3
Share
The First round of Kalon Tripa and
Members of Parliament campaign north India.
05/05/2010 Wednesday
We left Dekyi Ling early in the 8:00 a.m. since we had to go further to Clementown for a meeting. But not to worry we reach there as time allotted. But there were no public gathered, Tibetan women association of Clementown were fill with young women who were very naïve yet energetic and so helpful and ran here and there to announce to gather people.
We waited there and when the time was by 9:30a.m. We decided to start with our president’s speech. There were around 60-100 people, including regional Tibetan women’s Association.
To start with I gave very brief introduction of our party and president Mr. Chime youngdong.
Mr. Chime sat down in front of mike and gave the speech mostly related with the campaign and spoke very loudly and clearly to the public, which made the people thankful to us. There were many topics to mention on which he spoke about, where every topic is related to campaign, interesting and informative.
With-out mentioning every topic, he started the talk with the introduction about the 2011 Kalon Tripa nominees and future members’ of parliament. He also informed the people that Mr. Tashi wangdue was our nominee but he withdrew because of his personal health condition. He further gave brief introduction of our two Kalon Tripa nominees since it’s our most important duty. Regarding Chithue, we had nominated 15 people each from three province of Tibet. Which we have not finalized it yet and we are waiting them to agree on our two recent conditions which we have produce before them.
Later he spoke about the only right which have to the people under democratic country that is to vote, people have the responsibility which is to vote and peoples’ practical duty is to participate politically.
He then continued about how important it is to have bi-cameral legislation in our democratic country. Mr. Chime related this topic with the critical situation that is life in exile after H. H. The Dalia Lama. Which everyone is scared! But that doesn’t stop us to live on and fight for our right against Chinese government. In the talk it was very important to relate and give example to the people, so he put up some example that is, England “common house and lord house”, United State “senate and representative house” and India “Rajya Sabha and Lok Sabha”. Which mean that we are also the democratic nation and we need two houses in parliament, in Mr. Chime’s point of view this is the only way to safe our exile government in future and with this there are transparency to the people and interdependency among these houses which will leap toward better future tomorrow.
When he already spoke about the critical situation then he further reminded the people about the survey made by “times Magazine” that, life after His Holiness where most of Tibetan people will go abroad in anyway, some will become Indian citizenship and some will be confused in middle with wondering what to do next and this scary survey may come true in real if we don’t cautious by now.
He strongly told people to be bright citizen and vote for the people who they think can lead the Tibet and who acknowledge the democracy. Where NDPT have full faith in our two Kalon Tripa nominees, Dr. lobsang Sangay and former Kalon Tripa Mr. Tenzin Namgyal Tethong.
His talk concluded by 11:00 a.m. and comes the question and answer session.
Later we proceeded toward Tibetan settlement in Lhakanwala by 12:00 noon. Where we reached there around 1:00 p.m. and we were warmly welcomed by old aged home assistance Sherab lak, regional Tibetan Women Association (TWA) president Dawa Choedon, T.W.A. Secretary Tenzin Dolma and public there. With little rest the meeting started by 1:30p.m. The meeting was held in Tibetan old aged home, where there were around 100 to 150 people.
Regional TWA president Dawa Choedon lak gave introduction to the people about our party president, me and Dekyi Ling regional president.
Mr. Chime then gave the talk for about an hour, the talk was like before where the most important point was to introduce our candidates and also the reason behind Kalon Tripa Sangdong Rinpochen who cannot stand for the next 2011 Kalon voting and his disagreement in standing up in future. Anyways when he concluded there was question and answer session where, public mostly gave their point of view and their ideas. We gratefully acknowledge it.
Before we left, we had tea with the members there and spoke on different topics. By the time we were leaving we saw lots of Tibetan aged people there who were respecting us a-lot, and we can see in their eyes that they have great hope in Tibetan youngsters and thanking all of us in taking such a great step. It was bit of thrilling moment for all of us.
After all the campaign in these two places was successful and bitter but sweet trip in terms of future Tibet.
We thank everyone and all the regional NGO were so supportive, where we feel like we are real Tibetan!!!!!!! And we feel like time is running out.

We reached at Tsering Dondhen ling settlement by 3:30 p.m. the meeting was started with-out any introduction since there were no NDPT regional members. So Mr. Chime Youngdong gave introduction about himself.
The meeting was held in Tsering Dhondhen ling’s community hall, where there were around 150 people or more, we came during the time where the local residence were praying for the recent earth quake’s victims at Kyigudo(Tibet). Although we had face some problem in taking out time from their prayer, but when we got the opportunity for president’s talk we were glad because the number of people attended campaign in this small settlement was over whelming.
Mr. Chime started the speeches with introduction for our political party NDPT and it’s time of origin and the reason behind starting such political party and who’s consent.
After-wards with-out wasting any of time for the meeting, Mr. Chime spoke about our main purpose of campaign which was to speak about our Kalon Tripa nominees and Chithues’. To start with Mr. Chime gave the introduction of two most prominent nominees of our party for next 2011 Kalon Tripa, Dr. Lobsang sangay and Former Kalon Tripa Mr. Tenzin Namgyal Tethong.
Mr. Chime further gave full information of our two nominees and their ability to run the Tibetan government in exile and their biography which promptly related with our campaign.
Mr. Chime spoke for almost one hour where the time came around 4:30 p.m. in Tsering Dondhen Ling Settlement, after which we directly went to Rajpur Tibetan Settlementand by 5:00 p.m. we reached. Where the situation was almost same because they were praying for the victims as well and the number of people were around 150 to 200. We gladly received by the settlements chief. He gave the introduction of our president and our party NDPT.
Right after chief’s introduction, our president repeated the same speech given before. By the time Mr. Chime completed his speech, the time came around 6:00 p.m.
At the end, today’s campaign came to the conclusion with settlement’s chief thanking us all. Lastly the campaign in these two settlements was completed with full satisfaction.

The First round of 2011 Kalon Tripa and Member of Parliament campaign in north India

3rd May 2010 /Dickyling
Deckyi ling regional president Mr Tsering Dorjee had warmly welcomed the central president of NDPT Mr. Chime Youngdung and assistant secretary Mr. Tenzin Younten.
The talk was held in, Dekyi ling Tibetan community hall on 3th May, 2010 at after noon, where, around 100 to 200 public gathered, there were regional members, representative of regional NGOs, also official and non-official members around 30 were gathered.
The talk was begun with the introduction of party and significance of 2011 campaign by the president of NDPT Mr. Chime Youngdung.
Mr. Chime stressed on the importance of the up-coming voting and public participation of Kalon Tripa and member of parliaments (Chithue). Mr. Chime further emphasized on the essentiality of having a bi-cameral legislation and party system in Tibetan society.
He reminded public on the special meeting held in 2008 which at the end of conclusion, came about how important it is to have a political party in our society and also told how meeting in Swiss where the youngsters came together with having the same observation about the importance of political party in Tibetan society. Which we can consider that political knowledge is rising amongst the common people and especially young Tibetan.
Since from the founding of NDPT 1994, NDPT had gradually developed, so much that now are days we have the power of nominating the people for the chithue and kalon tripa. Although we have worked really hard on candidates winning, instantly it all goes into vain, because after their coming to the post, they get detached from NDPT, these are such problems we faced, so NDPT Centrex came to a conclusion which is very simple and brought out 2 very simple conditions which are;
1. When any candidate comes to the post, they have to support any kind of bill passed on democratic process in the parliament.
2. To be attend whenever NDPT organize the meeting when their time allowed it. These two conditions are very simple and they have to sign on it.
And not to repeat the past mistakes, now are days we are contacting each and every nominee and ask them whether they are willing to be our nominee and to accept our conditions.
After the speech by Mr. Chime, there was many questions asked from the public and Mr. Chime had answered every question willingly and the audiences were happy about that, with that the meeting came to a successful conclusion.
Meeting was concluded by the vote of thanks by Mr. Tsering Dorjee, “regional president of NDPT”
